Harvesting this year could hardly have been better!
By 18th of September, grape picking was completed in exceptional conditions both from a weather and sanitary point of view.

All started on 10th September when the grapes were well ripened, meaning that very littlle sorting was necessary.

For the whites, the alcoholic fermentation has started in cask after a little racking of the must; for the reds, partially destalked, a fermentation check on screen showed a smooth, promising progress following a few days of cold maceration.

Everything looks good for our wines - worthy of this excellent year, which 2009 is forecasted to be!

Harvest planned for the 10th of september!
In these first days of september, the grapes are healthy and nearly ripe!

On the most sunny slopes, the grapes still hold tight to the stems and the skins are thick and shiny; after analysis in each parcel and discussions with meteorologists we made the choice to wait until the 10th of september to start harvesting.

Our team was waiting for that decision to start: former harvesters from Jean Garaudet and from our 2007 and 2008 team prepare to face the hard work in good spirits; sorting out the rotten grapes may be easier than last year!

But, as long as the last vat is not completed, no one knows what the weather will be! Let us not hurry too much to announce a great vintage even if, today, the potential is there.

Approaching harvest
With the end of august approaching it is time to prepare for the grape harvest.

The recent heat wave has accelerated maturity of the grapes ; the process is completed in the Côte de Beaune and progressing well in the Hautes Côtes; so far, the condition of the grapes is excellent and the first checks on maturity, at equivalent dates, would suggest a standard close to 1997.

For the red wines, the malolactic fermentation is finished so they will continue to refine over the next few months; the white wines were bottled on 20th. August ;with an aroma of fresh yellow fruit and good acidity and structure, it is expected they will be able to age well.

Vegetation growth was speeded up by good overall weather conditions in May making it necessary to quickly complete debudding and tying up in order to protect the younger, more fragile, branches.

Flowering started towards the end of the month in the more advanced lots of Chardonnay (Beaune Clos des Mouches) and early June for Pinot Noir; in spite of a period of rain and lower temperatures, the setting of the vine should progress well. At this key period in time, the advance gained this year makes it the second year in advance (after 2007) over the last 15 years, suggesting that harvesting could be very early in September. There have been signs of the first generation Cochylis and Eudemis, somewhat more than for previous vintages, but from counts made in accordance with new rational cultivation techniques it appeared that no action was necessary.

The season has begun in the vineyards
The warm and sunny conditions at the end of April have stimulated growth of the vine.

Bud bursting took place around 6 April for the earlier variety of Chardonnay vines, roughly between the development noticed in 2007 and 2008; this is largely due to the fact that in April cold and wet periods alternated with almost summer-like conditions. In the Beaune Grèves sector, debudding work to control the future grape crop output to a reasonable level, started on 23 April. In accordance with the new regulations for agriculture we started on 7 May to spray against mildew and on part of the domain, against oidium. At the time of writing the growth rate is halfway between the rates registered in the 2 preceding years. In the coolness of the cellar, the malolactic fermentation is progressing for the 2008 vintage.

Brigitte Berthelemot takes over
On Friday 3rd April, after 2 years of hard work, Domaine Berthelemot opened its new wine tasting cellar in Meursault; many officials and journalists assisted at the inauguration.

At 4pm Marc Cugney, domain manager, gave a guided tour of the cellar and equipment in Tailly after which at 5 pm the new wine tasting cellar located Rue des Forges in Meursault was inaugurated; at the reception, guests were able to taste the 2007 vintage - and appreciate all the charm of the premises. In her speech, Brigitte Berthelemot stressed that her domain "respected tradition in its working methods particularly regarding the quality of the grapes, constant monitoring of output from pruning stage, right harvesting dates, hand picking, careful sorting during picking and then on the sorting belt...".                                                                    Brigitte Berthelemot thanked Yves Darviot and Jean Garaudet - and their wives - for all their help and support and also others, including friends, suppliers, grape pickers not forgetting her husband and respective families; before inviting her guests to taste the first vintage produced by her domain, she concluded by saying: "we must remain modest when facing nature but our aim is to honour the challenge and succeed".

The domain was founded 2 years ago and its first vintage bottled last September. To celebrate the event, Domaine Berthelemot organized a reception in honour of this 2007 vintage.

For several months the domain staff had worked on how to introduce the domain and its wine and with whom. The official opening was on 3rd April 2009 in the presence of many guests. At 4pm, officials and journalists were given a guided tour by domain manager Marc Cugney of the cellar and equipment in the Tailly location; visitors were able to appreciate the latest technology installed, comprising thermo-regulated vats, pneumatic press and ecological solar power and waste disposal systems coforming to new regulations. Afterwards at 5pm, the entirely renovated winestasting cellar in Meursault was inaugurated by Brigitte Berthelemot and guests. The reception took place in the charming house of the Rue des Forges in Meursault during which all the 2007 vintage could be tasted.

For the first time that the domain took part in the Concours general Agricole competition at this year's agricultural fair in Paris it won its first time ever medal!

The jury awarded a gold medal for Domaine Berthelemot's 2007 Beaune Longbois: this is a white chardonnay, mineral and characteristic of the shallow and stony soil where it is harvested; it is a tight wine with citrus tones (grapefruit, lemon...) and ideal for serving with seafoods.

Spring

Better weather means another stage in the work in the vineyard while in the cellar, the wine is developing in cask.

After a long and cold winter making work very hard, this Spring was long awaited. Pruning is now finished, vine plants replaced where necessary and springtime ploughing completed. Stakes and wires have been maintained and cane tying work is progressing well. We will soon be ready for the new season. For the 2008 vintage, the malolactic fermentation is underway which will give the wine its suppleness (the malic acid content is relatively high) and from recent tasting the end result looks promising; this will be carefully monitored over the coming months in order to ensure perfect vinification.
